Salisbury’s Historic Newtown Neighborhood announces this year’s holiday tour, scheduled for Sunday, December 8, 2019 from 11 am to 4 pm. The tour, a tradition for more than 30 years, provides a special opportunity to visit the interiors of some of Salisbury’s oldest and grandest homes decorated for the holidays. Tickets are $15 and will be on sale from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the day of the tour at Poplar Hill Mansion on Elizabeth St., Salisbury.
About Newtown
Newtown was Salisbury’s first residential district and was developed on farmland of the Poplar Hill plantation in the early 19th century. The fires that consumed Salisbury’s commercial district in 1860 and 1886 gave impetus to residential building in Newtown in the late 19th century and continued well into the 20th. Politicians, business owners, and professionals all built homes in Newtown. Their Federal, Colonial Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Shingle-style and English Cottage-style houses, many lovingly restored and maintained, are among Newtown’s dwellings, along with historic workers’ homes, outbuildings, and churches.
About the Houses
Homes open for viewing vary in age from the late 18th century to the 20th century inter-war period and all have been renovated or restored; many are furnished with antiques, and some homeowners display antique Christmas decorations as well. The tour houses are all within easy walking distance of one another, but visitors who wish to drive all or part of the tour will find convenient, free, on-street parking.
About the Neighborhood Association
Proceeds from the tour will benefit the activities and programs of the Newtown Neighborhood Association, which acts to preserve and promote Newtown as a great place to live, raise kids, or retire.
About the Tour
Newtown is located directly north of Salisbury’s downtown; visitors will find varied dining options convenient to Newtown. Not all houses may be accessible to those with disabilities. Please, no children under six or strollers inside houses. There will be no rain date or refunds.
